The article is an excerpt from the manuscript “The Living Mountain”, by Nan Shepherd, a feminine vision of why it is more interesting to know the mountains from their slopes than to climb peaks.
Written in the 1940s and first published in 1977, it is an ode to mountaineering that does not aim to reach any summit or to recreate the feat but seeks the company of the landscape.
To go out into the mountains to simply be with them and surrender to contemplation.
